How Robotic Solution Improve the Quality of Life for the Elderly
23 Nov 2021 16:00 - 16:45
Mr. Rick CHEUNG Kwan Ho Sales Executive, Win Win Industrial Company Limited
Roboratory focuses on the development and system integration of robotic solutions. Elderly service is a significant part of our business. Our solutions have been adopted by different organizations, like Oi Man Neighborhood Elderly Center, Wong Chuk Hang Hospital.
Pepper, NAO and Alpha mini are the humanoid robots. The robots are able to play music, perform dances and flexible movements. The chatbot allows them to perform humanoid interaction. They can accompany the elderly.
The robots can give verbal instruction and demonstration of simple exercise and stretch to the elderly, for example, raise arms, raise legs and rotate arms.
The threat of the pandemic and the social gathering ban makes family visit difficult. Temi is able to conduct video call through its app by HD screen and camera.
Our robot solutions also help the operation of the organizations as the receptionists. Temi will greet the visitors by speech or words shown on the screen and guide the visitors to the correct locations. Alpha mini is widely deployed as the attraction in the reception. We develop customized programs and offer instructions to the workers to operate the robots independently, this can make the elderly communicate with the robots easier.

Innovates for Smart Age, Smart Life
24 Nov 2021 15:30 - 16:15
Ms Tess LAW Assistant Project Manager, Jockey Club Smart Ageing Hub, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
The 5-year “Jockey Club Smart Ageing Hub” project aims to establish a cross-disciplinary network, not only to raise the public’s awareness on gerontechnology but also to connect cross-sector stakeholders to share and exchange ideas for enhancing the quality of gerontechnology products and elderly care services.
A “Day Experience Centre” was established within The Hong Kong Polytechnic University campus to provide public education on how technology may support individuals on “ageing in place”. Through showcasing a collection of gerontechnology products, conducting demonstrations, exhibitions, workshops and experiential activities, the project aims to enhance public awareness towards gerontechnology products and devices. The project also provides support to the local nursing hostels for advancing the “continuum of care” services. Partnering with six non-governmental organizations to set up “Real-life Hostels”, appropriate smart equipment is offered to address the operational challenges for supporting residents and health care teams, thereby relieving the work pressure of frontline professionals

Technology and Tools for Community-Engaged Services and Learning during COVID-19
24 Nov 2021 16:30 - 17:15
Ms. Chloe SIU Pui Yee Project Manager, Asia-Pacific Institute of Ageing Studies, Lingnan University
Lingnan University is the liberal arts university in Hong Kong and has the longest established tradition among the local institutions of higher education. The University upholds the motto “Education for Service” by providing students with different community service opportunities for engaging with society and helping those in need. Funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, the University has launched the “LU Jockey Club Gerontechnology and Smart Ageing Project” to promote Gerontechnology and support smart ageing Socialpreneurship development since 2019. This project also serves as an educational platform to provide training courses and workshops on “Gerontechnology in Healthcare, Dining, Living and Transport” to the elderly and the public.
COVID-19 has forced school closures and adopt online learning. The Project team has offered different productive ageing community educations and a series of online activities through videos, Facebook, and Zoom for the general public to learn at home to fight COVID-19 and promote humanity. In response to the increasing learning needs, the project team produced useful guides and practical workshops by using Zoom and Facebook live so as to offer our care amidst social distancing. The Project team and the elderly ambassadors are going to share their tips and learning experiences with the conference participants at the workshop.

Better Living with Technology:Enhancement in Gerontological Care
25 Nov 2021 10:30 - 11:15
Dr. Simon YAU Wing Lung Lecturer, School of Nursing and Health Studies,Hong Kong Metropolitan University
Technological advancement brings us better living in different aspects of our daily life. The use of technology can help to enhance the quality of gerontological care in the community. With the support of the HKSAR Government, “eCare” app was launched in 2019. eCare app is a mobile app for personal health management. Medication reminder can be easily set up by simply taking a photo using mobile phone. Users can also set up reminder for medical appointments. All records are stored in the app for easy tracking wither by family members or medical personnel when needed. The app also has the carer function which user can assign a carer for taking care of him/her. This can facilitate easy caring of the user for taking their medication and attending medical appointment. The app also provides drug information using our first Chinese drug database and have some medication tips by using built-in AR animation.
Promoting public health in the community is another aspect that technology can help. By using Virtual Reality (VR) technology, we can help to arouse public interest in a fun and interactive way. The VR hand-hygiene software were developed to promote proper hand-hygiene in the community. Under the COVID-19 pandemic, proper hand-hygiene is essential, but the very basic 7-steps of hand hygiene were easily neglected. Using the VR software, users can easily recall these essential steps and self-check on how well these procedures are being performed. By using VR technology, it can strengthen their knowledge on some essential daily routine to promote public health.

How Gerontechnology Relieve Caring Burden from Occupational Therapy Perspective
25 Nov 2021 11:45 - 12:30
Mr. Martin LAI Ka Ming Occupational Therapist I, Clinical Supervisor, Jockey Club “age at home” Gerontech Education and Rental Service
As population age, the incidence of functional limitations increases, demanding higher levels of care from caregivers and this results in high caring burden. While individuals are living longer globally, yet options for supported living environments for elders have not kept pace with this growth. Elders who are suffering from chronic conditions and impairments in activities of daily living (ADLs) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs), coupled with a shortage of family caregivers, have enhanced the role of occupational therapists and the importance of technological application for seniors derived from the concept of Gerontechnology. In general, “Gerontechnology” refers to development and deployment of technological tools that assist with meeting the needs and fulfilling the wishes of elders, and providing enhanced quality of life and independence, through support for aging in place, family engagement, and participation in ADLs and IADLs. Occupational therapy uses technology to increase the occupational performance and participation of clients. The provision of technological devices to an older person can have an array of positive outcomes based upon the specific interaction of that person’s needs and competences and the demand characteristics of his or her environment. There is a growing need for supportive approaches and devices that encourage individuals to remain living independently and to “age in place.”
In this workshop, Gerontechnology is demonstrated to be one possible way to reduce the burden on caregivers by increasing the autonomy of the elders, reducing the cost of paid help, decreasing the amount of hands-on caregiving required, and essentially improving the quality life of the elders and respective caregivers from the perspective of occupational therapy.
